Sig Extra 300XS

May 2003
This is the SIG Extra 300XS ARF. This is actually the most "ARF'y" plane I have ever bought. This is the first time I bought someones whole ready-to-fly plane. It worked out well, this is superb good combo. Weight is now in the high 13lb's. Carbon Fiber gear came from from Graph Tech

The Extra is a 74" wingspan airplane approximately 25% scale. It has almost 1000 square inches of wing area.

In May 2003 I crashed this plane flying a little agressively

The SIG Extra 300XS

I bought this plane slightly used in April 2002 from a seller online at RC Universe. What he advertised fit super nicely into my hangar as GLOW powered 1/4 scale aerobatic airplane that had fast field assembly. The owner had made VERY good choices in servos, hardware and the engine so it looked like a superb buy for me. We met in central Indiana. I bought the plane ready to fly minus receiver. I'd brought a receiver with me and was setting up and flying almost as soon as I had driven back to Chicago.

The MOKI 1.8 engine on this plane is an absolute pleasure. It starts easy, idles wonderfully, transitions flawlessly and puts out great power. Fuel consumption is a bit of an issue, but you're not flying full throttle much at all. After flying this combo a bit, I made a few small modifications to the plane. My mods were tiny. The ailerons needed a little bit of differential for this plane to roll axially. The engine box/firewall has no right thrust and it needs it . I added a couple degrees of right thrust by shimming up the left side of my MOKI's radial engine mount. It could use a little more but I'm not going to add it right now. I bought carbon fiber landing gear from GraphTech for a full six ounce weight savings over the stock aluminum gear. And I scrapped the MGA quarter scale pilot figure that the original builder had in there. His heavy head & shoulders weighed a whopping five ounces.

This plane is a fantastic flyer and it it getting alot of air time. Like I said, it transports easy, sets up faster than my other big airplane and it's conveniently glow powered. It is a very smooth ("smooooooov") flyer in the sequence. Ground handling and takeoffs are easy and it is a piece of cake to slow down and land. The plane accurately weighs 13lbs 14 oz. It flies great. Here is my equipment list:

  • The Moki 1.8 2-stroke engine with Bisson Pitts Muffler
  • Mejzlic 19X8 propeller. Spins at a solid 7700 RPM. It'll go faster when I start leaning it out more. This is about 23 lbs of static thrust, or about a 1.7:1 thrust to weight ratio
  • Carbon fiber gear from GraphTech gave a full six ounce weight savings
  • Futaba 9304 servos (69oz-in torque and 60 degrees at 0.22 seconds) are used on each half of the elevators
  • Futaba 9202 for the ailerons (69.4oz-in torque and 60 degrees at 0.22 seconds)
  • Futaba 9402 servo on pull/pull rudder is a high speed/tork metal gear (111.1oz-in. torque and 60 degrees at 0.08 seconds). Using big Airwild servo arm. AWESOME rudder servo for this size plane. Much faster than the JR 8411.
  • Rocket City Hardware all around.
  • Heavy Duty charge/switch with 1100 mah 6V five cell flight battery
